Import Export Code (IEC)

Import Export Code (IEC Code) is a mandatory 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade to individuals or businesses involved in importing or exporting goods and services from India. It is required for customs clearance, foreign currency remittances through banks, and availing export incentives or government benefits. Under the current system, new IECs are PAN-based, meaning the IEC number is the same as the entity’s PAN. However, separate registration on the DGFT portal is compulsory to activate the IEC and legally conduct international trade.

About IEC Code/

IEC Code Registration is the process of obtaining an Import Export Code from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade ( DGFT) to legally import or export goods and services from India. The registration is done online on the DGFT portal using PAN, business details, and bank information. While new IEC numbers are PAN-based and match the entity’s PAN, separate registration is still mandatory for activation. IEC registration enables customs clearance, foreign currency transactions, and access to export incentives. The code is issued once and remains valid for a lifetime, with only periodic updates required. So if you or your firm is a new importer you have to get IEC Certification done to ensure a hassle free process
