Frequently Asked Questions

The CRS is a certification scheme by BIS that mandates certain products to undergo testing and certification to ensure they meet specified Indian safety standards. Products under the CRS cannot be imported, sold, or distributed in India without BIS registration.

Both Indian and foreign manufacturers can apply for CRS. However, foreign manufacturers must designate an Authorized Indian Representative (AIR) to act as their liaison with BIS.

CRS covers over 75 product categories, including items like mobile phones, laptops, LED lighting, power adapters, and household appliances. The list of products is periodically updated, so manufacturers should check with BIS for the latest requirements.

The CRS registration process involves:

  • Submitting an application to BIS.
  • Testing the product at a BIS-recognized
  • laboratory to ensure it meets Indian safety standards.
  • Submitting test reports along with other required documentation to BIS.
  • If the product meets all requirements, BIS issues a registration number

CRS registration is valid for two years. After that, it must be renewed, provided there have been no changes in the product design or manufacturing process.

The AIR acts on behalf of foreign manufacturers in all communications and submissions to BIS. This includes submitting applications, handling inquiries, and ensuring compliance with BIS requirements.

The AIR acts on behalf of foreign manufacturers in all communications and submissions to BIS. This includes submitting applications, handling inquiries, and ensuring compliance with BIS requirements.

All testing for CRS must be conducted at BIS-recognized laboratories in India. Test reports from international labs are generally not accepted.

No, each manufacturing unit producing a particular product requires its own CRS registration. If the same product is made in different facilities, each facility needs to be registered separately.

Non-compliant products may be seized, and penalties may be imposed. Additionally, manufacturers and importers cannot legally sell or distribute these products in the Indian market without CRS registration.

If the design or manufacturing process of the registered product remains unchanged, retesting is typically not required. However, BIS may conduct random inspections or require retesting to ensure ongoing compliance.

Yes, but products sold before CRS registration is obtained are considered non-compliant and subject to penalties. Manufacturers should obtain registration before product launch.

No, CRS applies to finished products only, not to individual components or spare parts unless otherwise specified by BIS.

Some products may qualify for exemptions based on their end use, such as items used for research and development, demonstration, or export. Exemption approval must be requested from BIS.
