Preparation is the key to a "Clean Audit." To succeed, your facility must present organized evidence of its operations.

• Business Licenses: Incorporation certificates and trade licenses.

• Payroll Records: Detailed salary slips, time-sheets (OT tracking), and social security payments.
• Health & Safety: Fire safety certificates, machinery maintenance logs, and First Aid training records.

Achieving a successful SMETA audit is a structured journey. We break it down into five professional phases:

1. Sedex Registration: Register your site on the Sedex platform as a Supplier (B Member).
2. Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ): Complete the digital SAQ, which provides auditors with an initial view of your operations.
3. Appointing the Auditor: Select a Sedex-affiliated third-party audit body (AAC) to schedule your site visit.
4. The On-Site Audit: The auditor conducts a site tour, reviews documents, and performs confidential worker interviews.
5. Closing the Loop: Any non-compliances (NCs) are recorded. You must provide evidence of corrective actions (CAPR) to finalize the report.

Timing varies based on the size of your facility and the availability of auditors.

• Preparation: 2 to 4 weeks (Internal gap analysis and document organization).
• Audit Execution: 1 to 4 days (Depending on the number of employees).
• Report Upload: 10 to 15 business days after the audit is completed.
• Corrective Action Window: Usually 30 to 60 days if major issues are found.

The cost of Sedex compliance is divided into two categories:

• Sedex Membership Fee: Paid directly to Sedex (UK) annually. This fee varies based on the number of sites you register.
• Audit Fees: Paid to the third-party auditing body. This is calculated based on "Man-Days"—the larger your workforce, the more days (and auditors) are required to complete the assessment.
• Travel & Expenses: Auditors typically charge for travel and accommodation for on-site visits.

A SMETA audit does not have a formal "expiry date," but it does have a shelf life determined by your customers.

• Standard Frequency: Most global buyers require a full re-audit every 12 to 24 months.
• Follow-up Audits: If significant non-compliances are found, a "Follow-up Audit" may be required within 6 months to verify that issues were corrected.
• Continuous Membership: Your Sedex platform membership must be renewed annually to keep your data visible to your clients.
