The
BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is a pivotal product certification process managed by the
Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). It was introduced in 2012 by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to address the need for quality assurance in the rapidly expanding electronics and IT sector.
Simply put: The CRS scheme ensures that all specified electronic and IT goods sold in India meet the prescribed Indian Standards (IS) for safety and performance.
Under this scheme, manufacturers must register with the BIS based on a
“self-declaration of conformity” after their product has been tested by a BIS-recognized laboratory. This process is distinct from the traditional BIS ISI mark scheme, as it focuses specifically on safety compliance for electronic goods and does not require a mandatory factory inspection.
The ultimate goal of the
CRS BIS is twofold:
- Consumer Protection: To safeguard Indian consumers from dangerous, spurious, and substandard electronic products.
- Trade Facilitation: To promote quality manufacturing and allow legitimate, high-quality products, whether imported or domestically manufactured, to access the market easily.
Once registered, the product is allowed to display the BIS Standard Mark along with a unique
R-number (e.g., R-XXXXXXXX), which signifies that the manufacturer has successfully obtained the
BIS CRS certificate.
