• Manufacturers & Processors: Dairy units, vegetable oil refineries, and meat processing plants.

• Hospitality & Retail: Restaurants, hotels (up to 4-star), schools/office canteens, and caterers.
• Distributors: Wholesalers, retailers, and suppliers operating within state boundaries.
• Proprietary Foods: Specialized food products that do not have standardized ingredients yet.

To avoid "Application Reverted" status, ensure you have these documents ready:

• Basic Registration: Photo ID, Passport size photo, and Address proof of the business.
• State License (Additional Docs):
• Blueprint/Layout Plan: Showing the dimensions and dedicated areas for different operations.
• Equipment List: Names and capacities of machinery used.
• Water Analysis Report: A lab report confirming the portability of water used in food production.
• NOC from Municipality: Local body clearance.
• Form IX: Nomination of a person by the company to be responsible for compliance.

The process has been modernized via the FoSCoS portal. Here is the professional workflow:

1. Eligibility Audit: Determine if you fall under Registration or State License based on turnover/capacity.
2. Form Submission: Filing Form A (Registration) or Form B (State License) on the FoSCoS website.
3. Document Uploading: Attaching the digital copies of the checklist mentioned above.
4. Fee Payment: Clearing the government dues via the online gateway.
5. Inspection (If Required): For State Licenses, a Food Safety Officer (FSO) may visit the premises to audit hygiene standards.
6. Certificate Issuance: Once the authority is satisfied, the digital certificate is issued.

Time is money in the food business. Generally, the timelines are:

• Basic Registration: Usually processed within 7 to 10 days. If an inspection is ordered, it may take up to 30 days.
• State License: A more rigorous process taking between 30 to 60 days. This accounts for the time required for document scrutiny and physical inspections by the FSO.

The cost varies depending on the nature of the business and the duration of the license (1 to 5 years).

• Basic Registration: Flat fee of ₹100 per year.
• State License: * Manufacturers/Millers: ₹3,000 to ₹5,000 per year.
• Hotels/Restaurants: ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 per year.
• Other Food Businesses: Approximately ₹2,000 per year. (Note: Professional consultancy fees are separate from these government charges.)

An FSSAI license is not "forever." It is a rolling compliance requirement.

• Validity: You can opt for a validity period ranging from 1 to 5 years.
• The Renewal Window: The renewal application must be filed at least 30 days before the expiry date.
• Late Penalties: If you miss the deadline, a penalty of ₹100 per day is charged. If the license expires completely, you must stop operations and apply for a fresh license.
