DoT Extends Pro Tem Certificate Validity to Two Years

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has made a big move to help the telecom industry by giving Pro Tem Security Certificates a long extension. A notice sent out on December 5, 2025, said that these certificates are now good for two years instead of the original six months.

This shift is a big deal for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and importers since it makes it easier for them to keep their businesses running by making it easier to renew their licenses.

What is a Pro Tem Certificate?

The Pro Tem Certificate is a temporary permission from the National Centre for Communication Security (NCCS) that was first given out in October 2024. It lets companies keep selling and importing telecom equipment, such IP routers and Wi-Fi CPE, while their products are being tested for security in a lab.

In short, it stops market interruptions by letting business go on while the “technical paperwork” is being finished.

Key Details of the Extension

The update brings several important changes for stakeholders:

  • New Applications: Pro Tem certifications issued on or after December 5, 2025, will automatically be valid for two years.
  • Existing Certificates: You can apply for a renewal on the MTCTE portal if you already have a 6-month certificate that is about to expire. The new certificate will be good for the rest of the 2-year period, starting from the date it was first issued.
  • Broader Scope: The NCCS has added more devices to this program. It now includes 5G Core SMF, Optical Line Terminals (OLT), and Optical Networking Terminals (ONT), in addition to routers and Wi-Fi devices.

Why This Matters for Your Business

Before this modification, the 6-month window was typically too short for enterprises to finish complicated security evaluations, which caused “renewal stress” for many of them.

  • Reduced Costs: Fewer applications for renewal mean reduced fees for processing and administration.
  • Market Stability: Two years of validity gives you a steady time frame for long-term supply chain planning without worrying about your accreditation running out.
  • Support for Innovation: OEMs may spend less time on compliance issues and more time on product development now that they don’t have to worry about periodic renewals.

Compliance Made Easy

The extension gives you extra time, but the security standards (ITSAR) are still just as severe as they were before. Businesses still need to give a “Declaration of Conformity” and promise to repair any security holes detected during lab testing.
