BIS ISI Mark

New Mandatory BIS Certification for Mechanical Gas Leak Detectors (IS 13432:2023)

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has officially released the Mechanical Type Gas Leak Detector for use with Low Pressure Liquefied Petroleum Gas Burning Appliances (Quality Control) Order, 2025.

Mechanical Gas Leak Detectors now have to get the BIS ISI Mark certification because of this new rule. This means that for producers, importers, and brand owners, selling these safety gadgets in India without a valid BIS license will now be against the law under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

Key Highlights of the QCO

  • Standard Applied: IS 13432:2023
  • Scope: This order applies to all mechanical gas leak detectors made for use with LPG appliances that don’t need a lot of pressure.
  • Regulatory Authority: Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
  • Exemptions: This order does not apply to goods made in the United States for the purpose of export.

Implementation Timeline

To give firms time to adjust their manufacturing processes to the new quality standards, the government has set up a phased implementation window:

What This Means for Your Business

Stakeholders need to start the certification process right away to make sure they can always access the market. The change needs:

  • Product Testing: Making sure that your detectors meet the strict safety and performance standards set out in IS 13432:2023.
  • Factory Audit: Getting the factory ready for an inspection by a BIS inspector.
  • Documentation: Making a full technical file that has test reports and information about the quality management system (QMS).
