The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released the Machinery and Electrical Equipment Safety (Omnibus Technical Regulation) Order, 2024, which mandates BIS Scheme X Certification. It assures that all machinery and electrical equipment subject to this rule fulfill strict Indian safety and quality criteria before being sold or utilized in India.
This rule applies to pumps, compressors, cranes, transformers, switchgear, and rotating electrical machinery. Manufacturers and importers must get BIS certification to certify conformity with Indian Standards (IS), including IS 16819:2018/ISO 12100:2010 for risk assessment and mitigation. In addition, product-specific Type B and Type C standards apply, as specified in the regulation's schedules.
To get BIS Scheme X Certification, enterprises must submit an application through the Manak Online site, test their products in BIS-approved laboratories, and pass a factory inspection. Certified items must also adhere to labeling, branding, and documentation regulations.
This certification is intended to improve product safety, consumer protection, and industry standards in India. Non-compliance may result in penalties, product bans, or market limitations. Businesses must assure continuing compliance by conducting frequent audits and renewals.
