WPC-ETA Approval
The WPC-ETA (Wireless Planning and Coordination - Equipment Type Approval) is a key certification. It's given by the Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) Wing of India's Ministry of Communications. It's needed for wireless products in unlicensed bands in India. This approval makes sure products follow Indian rules. It also prevents interference with licensed spectrum. The WPC Wing is part of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. It was founded in 1952 and now operates through the Saral Sanchar Online Portal. WPC issues ETA Licenses for IT and electronic devices. These must meet wireless technology needs. WPC-approved items can be sold in India, as long as they're safe for humans and use unlicensed bands.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What is WPC-ETA approval?
WPC-ETA approval is required for wireless and Bluetooth devices that operate in de-licensed frequency bands in India. It ensures that the device complies with Indian regulations for using radio frequencies without causing harmful interference.
Q2. Who needs to apply for WPC-ETA approval?
Any manufacturer, importer, or seller who wants to sell or distribute wireless communication devices like Bluetooth speakers, Wi-Fi routers, drones, or smart home devices in India must get WPC-ETA approval.
Q3. Which devices require WPC-ETA approval?
Devices that use de-licensed frequency bands like Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, RFID readers, drones, and other short-range communication devices need WPC-ETA approval.
Q4. How long does it take to get WPC-ETA approval?
The approval process typically takes about 4-6 weeks after submission of all required documents and fees.
Q5. Is WPC-ETA required for personal use of wireless devices?
No, if you are importing or using a device for personal use and not for sale or commercial distribution, you may not need WPC-ETA approval. However, the device must still operate in the permitted frequency bands.
Q6. What documents are required for WPC-ETA approval?
Commonly required documents include: Product datasheet and technical specifications. Frequency test report from a certified lab. Company registration certificate (for importers/manufacturers). Authorization letter if applying on behalf of a company.
Q7. Can foreign manufacturers apply for WPC-ETA approval?
Yes, foreign manufacturers can apply through an Indian representative or importer, as long as the product is intended for sale in India.
Q8. What is the difference between WPC-ETA and WPC License?
WPC-ETA approval is for devices in de-licensed bands. These bands don't need spectrum allocation. On the other hand, a WPC License is needed for devices in licensed frequency bands.
Q9. Is WPC-ETA approval required for all frequency bands?
No, WPC-ETA is only needed for devices in de-licensed frequency bands. If your device uses a licensed band, you'll need a different WPC license.
Q10. Does WPC-ETA approval expire?
No, the WPC-ETA certificate does not expire once issued. But, if there are big changes to the product design or technology, you might need re-approval.
