Under IS 13252, Part 1:2010, Passport Readers must have the BIS CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) certification covering information technology equipment safety. Manufacturers must get their products tested in a BIS-registered laboratory, file an application together with the necessary paperwork, and follow safety and EMC guidelines in order to be certified. Authorized Indian Representatives (AIR) are required of foreign manufacturers. Approved, the BIS awards the Standard Mark, therefore guaranteeing product safety and quality for the Indian market. The certification has two years validity and needs renewal. Legal imports into India and sales depend on BIS compliance.
