SNI Certification

SNI (Standar Nasional Indonesia) is Indonesia's mandatory national standard and product certification system. Managed by the National Standardization Agency (BSN) and enforced by relevant ministries, SNI certification ensures that products sold in Indonesia meet the required safety, quality, and performance benchmarks. For manufacturers and exporters targeting the Indonesian market, obtaining the SNI mark is a non-negotiable prerequisite for legal market entry.

What is SNI Certification?

SNI (Standar Nasional Indonesia) is the only national standard that applies in Indonesia. It is developed by the National Standardization Agency (BSN) and serves as the benchmark for product quality, safety, and performance in the Indonesian market.

SNI certification is mandatory for products listed under the SNI Mandatory (SNI Wajib) scheme. This includes a broad range of consumer goods, electrical products, food items, building materials, and industrial equipment. Products that fall under the mandatory list cannot be manufactured, imported, or sold in Indonesia without displaying the SNI mark.

The certification process involves product testing at an accredited laboratory, factory audit by a Product Certification Body (LSPro), and ongoing surveillance to ensure continued compliance. The SNI mark on a product signifies that it has been independently verified to meet Indonesian national standards.

What we do for you

  • Mandatory Compliance: Required for a wide range of consumer and industrial products entering Indonesia.
  • BSN Oversight: Governed by Indonesia's National Standardization Agency.
  • Product Testing: Rigorous testing at accredited laboratories against Indonesian national standards.
  • Market Access: Essential for customs clearance and retail distribution across Indonesia.

Compliance

Is it mandatory?

Indonesia enforces strict market surveillance for products under the SNI Wajib (Mandatory SNI) scheme. Products listed under this scheme cannot be legally manufactured, imported, distributed, or sold in Indonesia without a valid SNI certificate.

  • Customs Enforcement: Non-compliant products are seized at Indonesian ports.
  • Heavy Fines: Violators face significant financial penalties.
  • Criminal Prosecution: Repeated or willful violations may result in criminal charges.

The Indonesian government regularly updates the mandatory product list, and manufacturers must stay current with these regulations to maintain market access.

Validity & renewal

An SNI certificate is typically valid for 3 to 4 years from the date of issuance, depending on the product category and the issuing LSPro. Renewal requires re-application, potentially new testing if standards have been updated, and a factory re-audit. Manufacturers must undergo periodic surveillance inspections (usually annual) during the certificate's validity period. Failure to comply with surveillance requirements or standard updates may result in suspension or revocation of the SNI mark.

  • Validity depends on the scheme: some approvals run for a fixed term and must be renewed before they expire, others stay valid while the product and the applicable standard stay the same.
  • Changes to the product design, critical components, factory or brand name can need a fresh test or an amendment.
  • We record your expiry date and remind you well before a renewal or surveillance step is due.

Frequently asked questions

Is SNI certification mandatory for all products sold in Indonesia?

No, SNI certification is only mandatory for products listed under the SNI Wajib (Mandatory SNI) scheme. However, voluntary SNI certification is available for products not on the mandatory list and can provide a competitive advantage in the Indonesian market.

Can foreign manufacturers apply for SNI certification directly?

Yes, foreign manufacturers can apply for SNI certification through an accredited Product Certification Body (LSPro). They will need to provide all required documentation and allow a factory audit at their manufacturing facility.

How long does the SNI certification process take?

The typical timeline is 8 to 14 weeks from application to certificate issuance, depending on product complexity, testing requirements, and factory audit scheduling.

What happens if my product fails SNI testing?

If a product fails testing, the manufacturer must address the identified non-conformities and resubmit the product for re-testing. The certification body will provide a detailed report of the failures to guide the corrective actions.

Do I need a local representative in Indonesia for SNI?

While not always strictly required, having a local representative or importer in Indonesia is highly recommended. They can facilitate communication with the certification body and handle ongoing surveillance requirements.

Is the factory audit conducted in Indonesia or at the manufacturing facility?

The factory audit is conducted at the actual manufacturing facility, regardless of its location. For foreign manufacturers, the LSPro auditors will travel to the factory for the on-site inspection.
