Important Clarification

CNG Certification for Cars: Important Clarification

Instacertify does not provide PESO certification or approval for CNG conversion of passenger cars, including retrofitted car CNG kits. CNG vehicle conversion and retrofitment are handled under the applicable Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR), with type approval obtained through a testing agency notified under Rule 126, such as ARAI, as applicable. Requirements can vary according to the vehicle, kit, and conversion category. Please contact the relevant automotive testing agency or an authorised retrofitment provider for guidance on CNG kit type approval and installation. PESO-related approvals may apply separately to regulated cylinders, gas storage, or associated facilities, depending on relevant rules.

    Frequently asked questions

    What is a PESO certificate?

A PESO certificate is a mandatory approval issued by the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (India). It signifies that a product, equipment, or facility handling hazardous substances (like gas, oil, explosives, or high pressure) meets the safety standards set by Indian laws.

How to get a PESO license in India?

Process involves: Preparation of technical documents, online application submission via PESO portal, AIR appointment for foreign manufacturers, PESO verification/inspection, and license grant upon compliance.

    Who requires a PESO license?

You need a PESO license if you are involved in: Petroleum (petrol pumps, refineries, storage terminals), Explosives (fireworks manufacturers, mining explosive users), Gases (oxygen plants, cylinder filling stations, LPG bottling plants), Equipment (manufacturers of flameproof/explosion-proof electrical equipment).

What is the difference between ATEX and PESO certificate?

ATEX is mandatory for the EU; PESO is mandatory for India. ATEX certificates aren’t valid alone in India but PESO accepts ATEX/IECEx test reports. ATEX allows self-declaration for lower-risk categories; PESO requires regulatory body approval.

What are the benefits of having a PESO certificate?

Legal Compliance, Safety Assurance, and Market Access to major industries (ONGC, IOCL, Defence).

How long is the PESO license valid for?

Equipment/Product Approvals: typically 3–5 years. Storage/Operational Licenses: generally 3–10 years (renewable). Licenses must be renewed before expiry.

Is a PESO certificate required for an oxygen cylinder?

Yes. PESO strictly regulates compressed gases. You need a license/approval for manufacturing the cylinders, filling the cylinders, and storing large quantities of filled cylinders.

What are the duties of the PESO?

Framing and enforcing safety rules, scrutinizing applications and issuing licenses, inspecting factories, storage units, petrol pumps, and investigating accidents.

What is the qualification for a petrol pump owner?

Must be Indian citizen, aged 21–55 years (relaxable to 60), with minimum 10th pass (rural) or 12th pass/graduation (urban).

    How to join PESO?

Recruitment through UPSC for Group A posts or periodic exams for technical positions. Requires Engineering degree or Master’s in Chemistry.
