What is MAC Address Registration?
A MAC (Media Access Control) address is a unique 48-bit hardware identifier assigned to every network interface controller (NIC) for communications on the physical network segment. MAC Address Registration through the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Registration Authority ensures that each manufacturer's devices have globally unique identifiers that prevent address conflicts on networks worldwide.
The IEEE assigns Organizationally Unique Identifiers (OUIs) and MAC Address Blocks to manufacturers. There are three types of MAC Address Blocks:
- MA-L (Large): Approximately 16.7 million addresses
- MA-M (Medium): Approximately 1 million addresses
- MA-S (Small): Approximately 4,096 addresses
The choice depends on the manufacturer's production volume and number of product lines.
