What is LWG Certification?

The Leather Working Group (LWG) is a not-for-profit membership organization that has developed an environmental audit protocol specifically for the leather manufacturing industry. It was established to improve the environmental stewardship practices of the leather industry through alignment of assessment standards and the provision of benchmarking tools.

The LWG audit protocol assesses leather manufacturers (tanneries) across key environmental areas including energy and water usage, waste management, chemical management, air and noise emissions, and traceability. Based on the audit score, tanneries are awarded a Gold, Silver, or Bronze rating.

These ratings are used by major global brands including Nike, Adidas, LVMH, H&M, and automotive manufacturers as a key criterion for responsible leather sourcing decisions.

What we do for you

  • Environmental Audit Protocol: Comprehensive assessment of tannery environmental practices and chemical management.
  • Traceability Standards: Ensuring full supply chain transparency from raw hide to finished leather.
  • Rating System: Gold, Silver, and Bronze ratings based on environmental performance scores.
  • Brand Requirements: Required by major global fashion and automotive brands for leather sourcing.

LWG audit scoring: Gold, Silver, Bronze and Audited

Each scored section gets a percentage. The thresholds are:

RatingMinimum score in each critical section
Gold85%
Silver75%
Bronze65%
Audited50%

The final rating is the lowest rating achieved in any critical section, so a tannery that scores Gold in most sections but Silver in effluent treatment is rated Silver. Some questions are threshold questions that cap the rating regardless of the section score. A facility below the Audited threshold does not pass.

LWG traceability requirements

The audit checks how much of your incoming hides and skins can be traced back to their origin, and how. Traceability is scored separately from the medal rating at present, but LWG has said it will become a critical section in a future version of the standard.

  • Physically marked to a slaughterhouse: weighted 100%.
  • Documented to a slaughterhouse: 80%.
  • Traced to a group of slaughterhouses: 70%.
  • Traced to a region or collection point: 60%.

Tanneries buying from many small collectors usually start with regional traceability, then improve supplier records batch by batch.

LWG subcontractor audit

Units that carry out part of the process for a certified leather manufacturer, for example finishing or splitting on job work, are audited under LWG’s subcontractor route. A subcontractor that passes is listed as Audited; medal ratings are reserved for leather manufacturers. If your buyer’s certified tannery sends work to you, it may need your audit to keep its own rating.

Compliance

Is it mandatory?

While LWG certification is not a government regulation, it has become a de facto commercial requirement in the leather industry. Major global brands and retailers now mandate LWG-rated leather sourcing as part of their corporate sustainability commitments.

Without LWG certification, tanneries risk losing access to premium international buyers and being excluded from global supply chains.

What is LWG certification?

LWG certification is the result of an audit against the LWG Leather Manufacturer Standard, run by the Leather Working Group, a not-for-profit body of brands, tanneries, chemical suppliers and others. The current version of the standard covers 17 sections, from operating permits, energy, water and effluent treatment to chemical management, restricted substances, traceability and social audit.

Brands in footwear, apparel, furniture and automotive interiors use the rating to choose suppliers, so Indian tanneries in Kanpur, Chennai, Ambur, Kolkata and Jalandhar that export to them are usually asked for it. Cost & fee structure

LWG certification costs include: LWG Membership Fee (annual fee based on company size and type), Audit Fees (paid to the approved auditing body, based on tannery size and complexity), Implementation Costs (investment in environmental management systems, monitoring equipment, ETP upgrades if needed), and Consultancy Fees (for gap analysis, documentation, and audit preparation support). Costs vary significantly based on the current state of the tannery's environmental management and the improvements needed. Contact us for a tailored assessment.

LWG timeline and cost

Most tanneries need two to six months to prepare, depending on their gaps, then a few weeks for the audit and the report. The cost has three parts: LWG membership, the audit fee charged by the LWG-approved audit body (including auditor travel), and whatever upgrades your gap assessment shows, such as metering or ETP improvements. We quote our own support separately after the gap assessment.

Validity & renewal

LWG audit ratings are valid for approximately 2 years from the date of the audit. Re-audits are required to maintain the rating. The LWG protocol is updated periodically, and tanneries must comply with the latest version at the time of re-audit. Significant changes to processes or environmental management systems may require an interim assessment. Tanneries should begin preparation for re-audit well in advance to ensure continuity of their rating.

  • Validity depends on the scheme: some approvals run for a fixed term and must be renewed before they expire, others stay valid while the product and the applicable standard stay the same.
  • Changes to the product design, critical components, factory or brand name can need a fresh test or an amendment.
  • We record your expiry date and remind you well before a renewal or surveillance step is due.

Frequently asked questions

What are the LWG rating levels?

LWG awards three rating levels based on the audit score: Gold (highest environmental performance), Silver (good environmental performance), and Bronze (baseline environmental compliance). The specific score thresholds are defined in the audit protocol.

Is LWG certification mandatory?

It is not a government regulation, but it is a commercial necessity. Major brands like Nike, Adidas, LVMH, and H&M require their leather suppliers to hold LWG certification as part of their responsible sourcing policies.

Who can apply for LWG certification?

Any leather manufacturer (tannery) can apply for LWG certification. This includes tanneries processing all types of leather, from raw hides to finished goods. Traders and sub-contractors can also register.

How long does the LWG audit take?

The on-site audit typically takes 1 to 3 days depending on the size and complexity of the tannery. The overall process from membership to rating can take several months, including preparation time.

Can we improve our rating from Bronze to Gold?

Yes, tanneries can improve their rating by enhancing their environmental management practices. After implementing improvements, a re-audit can be scheduled to reassess the score and potentially upgrade the rating.

Does LWG cover social or labor standards?

The primary focus of LWG is environmental performance. However, LWG has been expanding its scope to include animal welfare and social responsibility aspects. Separate social audits (like SMETA/SEDEX) are typically used for labor standards.

What is the full form of LWG?

LWG stands for Leather Working Group. It is a not-for-profit organisation that runs the most widely used environmental audit standard for leather manufacturers.

How is the LWG audit scored?

Each section is scored as a percentage, and the thresholds are 85% for Gold, 75% for Silver, 65% for Bronze and 50% for Audited. The overall rating is the lowest one achieved across the critical sections.

What is LWG traceability?

It is the share of your raw material that can be traced back to a slaughterhouse, a group of slaughterhouses or a region of collection. Physical marking scores highest, followed by documented traceability.

How long is LWG certification valid?

Leather manufacturer certification is valid for two years. A re-audit in the two months before expiry continues the certificate from the old expiry date, without a gap.
