How Long Does BIS CRS Registration Take in 2026? Step-by-Step Timeline
"How long will BIS take?" is the first question most electronics brands ask, usually because stock is already on the water or a launch date is fixed. The honest answer depends on your product and how ready your file is.
In short: when the product passes first time and the documents are complete, most BIS CRS registrations take about four to eight weeks from sending samples to receiving the R-number. Lab queues, test failures and BIS queries are what push projects to three months or more.
Below is a stage-by-stage view of where the time goes and what you can do at each stage to keep it short. If you are new to the scheme, start with our guide to the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme.
CRS Timeline at a Glance
| Stage | Typical time | What drives it |
|---|---|---|
| Product and standard check, document prep | 3 to 7 days | How quickly you share specs, labels and factory documents |
| Portal login for a new factory | 2 to 7 days | Business licence in English, correct factory address |
| Sample shipping to the lab | 2 to 10 days | Domestic or international shipping, customs for samples |
| Lab testing and report | 1 to 4 weeks | Standard, lab queue, long-duration tests, any failure |
| Application filing | 1 to 3 days | Documents ready, report verified on the portal |
| BIS review and grant | 2 to 4 weeks | Completeness of the file, queries raised and answered |
These are working ranges from typical projects, not BIS service commitments. A simple adaptor with a ready file sits at the short end. A new lithium battery, LED luminaire or multi-model series sits at the long end.
Stage 1: Product and Standard Check (Days 1 to 7)
Before anything is shipped, confirm the exact product category, the notified Indian Standard and the edition in force. Then collect the model list, ratings, photos, label artwork, user manual and critical component list.
How to save time: settle the series grouping now. Decide which models can be covered by one test and which need their own. Changing the model list after testing often means re-testing.
Stage 2: Portal Login (Days 2 to 7)
A factory registering for the first time creates a login on the BIS CRS portal by uploading its business licence. If the licence is in another language, a certified English translation is needed. Factories that already hold a registration can skip this step. Our crsbis.in portal guide explains the screens.
Stage 3: Test Request and Sample Shipping (Days 2 to 10)
You generate a test request on the portal and choose a BIS-recognised lab with the right scope. The sample and test request must reach the lab within 60 days. For overseas factories, courier time and sample clearance at Indian customs are the main variables.
Stage 4: Lab Testing (1 to 4 Weeks)
This is usually the longest stage. The time depends on:
- The standard. Battery safety tests under IS 16046 and some LED tests include conditioning and endurance tests that cannot be rushed.
- The lab's queue. Popular labs can have waiting lists, especially before compliance deadlines.
- First-time pass. A failure means fixing the design, sending a new sample and starting the test again.
How to save time: check the design against the standard before sending samples, especially markings, creepage distances, protection circuits and labels. Send spare samples so the lab is not waiting for more.
Stage 5: Filing the Application (1 to 3 Days)
Once the report is issued and verified on the portal, the application is filed on Form I with the declaration of conformity and documents. The application must be filed within 90 days of the report date.
Stage 6: BIS Review and Grant (2 to 4 Weeks)
BIS checks the test report, documents, declarations and label. If something is missing or does not match, a query is raised on the portal and the clock effectively stops until you answer. A clean file with consistent details moves fastest.
What Causes Most Delays?
- Old edition of the standard. A report against a superseded edition will not be accepted.
- Test failures. Each failure adds the time for a fix, a new sample and a new test.
- Mismatched details. Factory name, address, brand or model that differ between the report, label and application.
- Incomplete documents. Missing trademark proof, unsigned affidavits or an AIR not yet appointed.
- Late answers to queries. Every day a query sits unanswered is a day added.
- Expired reports. If the 90-day window passes, the product must be tested again.
How Does This Compare With Other BIS Routes?
CRS is usually the fastest BIS route because there is no factory inspection before registration. The ISI mark under Scheme-I needs a BIS officer to visit the factory and draw samples, and for overseas factories under FMCS BIS states an average of about six months. See our guide to BIS FMCS for foreign manufacturers for that route.
Practical Tips to Get Your R-Number Sooner
- Confirm the standard, edition and series grouping before testing.
- Have the label artwork reviewed before printing or sending samples.
- Prepare the trademark, factory and AIR documents while the lab tests.
- Choose a lab by its scope and current queue, not only its price.
- Answer BIS queries the same day where possible.
- Track the annual fee date once registered, so the registration is never suspended.
How Instacertify Helps
We plan the project backwards from your launch or shipment date. We check the design and labels before testing, book a lab with the right scope and a realistic slot, prepare the documents in parallel and answer BIS queries quickly. See our BIS CRS registration service for details.
Frequently asked questions
How long does BIS CRS registration take?
When the product passes first time and the documents are complete, most CRS projects take about four to eight weeks from sending samples to receiving the R-number. Lab queues, test failures and BIS queries can stretch this to three months or more.
Which stage takes the longest?
Usually lab testing. Some standards, such as battery safety tests and LED luminaire tests, include long-duration tests, and popular labs can have waiting lists.
Can I sell while my CRS application is pending?
No. A notified product cannot be sold, imported or listed online until it is registered and carries the Standard Mark with its R-number.
How long is the test report valid?
The application must be filed within 90 days of the test report date. After that the report is no longer accepted and the product must be tested again.
Does adding a new model take as long as a fresh registration?
Usually less. Adding a model to an existing registration needs a test report for the new model and a change request, but the factory and brand details are already on file.
Can a consultant guarantee a fixed approval date?
No one can honestly guarantee a BIS decision date. A good consultant can remove avoidable delays by checking the standard, documents and labels before testing starts.
