UKCA Certification Cost & Process for Indian Exporters (2026 Guide)
For Indian exporters shipping to the United Kingdom, the UKCA mark caused years of confusion. Deadlines moved several times. The good news for 2026 is that the rules have settled, and for most products the answer is simpler than it once looked.
In short: Great Britain recognises the CE mark indefinitely for 21 product regulations, so for most goods UKCA is optional. You can use CE, UKCA or both. You still need correct testing, a technical file, a declaration of conformity and UK importer details. Northern Ireland follows EU rules, so CE remains essential there.
UKCA vs CE: Which Do You Need?
| Destination | Accepted marking |
|---|---|
| Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) | CE or UKCA for products under the 21 covered regulations |
| Northern Ireland | CE, or CE plus UKNI where a UK body did the third-party assessment |
| European Union | CE only |
If you already have CE for the EU, you can usually sell the same product in Great Britain. UKCA matters if UK law and EU law diverge for your product, or if a UK buyer asks for it. Our comparison of CE, UKCA and UL covers the differences.
Products Covered by the CE Recognition
The indefinite recognition covers regulations such as:
- Electrical equipment (low voltage) and EMC
- Radio equipment
- Machinery
- Toys
- Personal protective equipment
- Pressure equipment and simple pressure vessels
- Gas appliances, ATEX equipment and lifts
- RoHS and ecodesign
Sectors with separate rules include medical devices, where CE certificates are accepted for a transition period running to 2028 or 2030 depending on the device and legislation, and construction products, where CE recognition has also been continued. Check the current GOV.UK guidance for your sector.
How to Get UKCA Certification
1. Identify the UK regulations
List every UK regulation that applies. A Wi-Fi speaker, for example, falls under radio equipment, which covers safety and EMC, plus RoHS.
2. Choose the conformity route
- Self-declaration: most electrical and electronic products. You test, prepare the technical file and sign the declaration.
- UK approved body: needed for higher-risk products such as some PPE, pressure equipment, certain machinery and products where designated standards were not fully applied.
3. Test to designated standards
UK designated standards mostly mirror EN standards. Test reports from an accredited lab, including labs in India, are generally usable if they cover the right standards.
4. Prepare the technical file
Include product description, drawings and circuit diagrams, risk assessment, test reports, list of standards applied, user manual and labels. Keep it for 10 years after the product is placed on the market.
5. Sign the UK declaration of conformity
List the product, the UK regulations, the designated standards and, if used, the approved body.
6. Mark and label
Apply the UKCA mark (or CE), with manufacturer and UK importer details. UKCA can be placed on a label or accompanying document until 31 December 2027.
Fast-Track UKCA
The UK has introduced a fast-track option that lets manufacturers use UKCA marking based on meeting EU requirements, so products already compliant with EU rules can carry UKCA without repeating work. If you only need CE, this is optional.
UKCA Certification Cost
There is no government fee for UKCA marking. Cost depends on:
- Testing: safety, EMC, radio and chemical tests, priced per model
- Approved body fees, only where third-party assessment is required
- Technical documentation: writing the risk assessment, file and declaration
- Number of models and variants and whether they can be grouped
If you already have CE test reports to current EN standards, the extra cost for UKCA is usually small, because the same reports can support both.
Timeline
For self-declared electrical products, plan around 3 to 6 weeks for testing and documentation. Approved body routes take longer and depend on their schedule.
Common Mistakes
- Paying for UKCA you do not need. Check whether CE recognition covers your product.
- Using CE for Northern Ireland incorrectly. Northern Ireland follows EU rules.
- No UK importer details. The importer's name and address must appear on the product or documents.
- Old standards. Test reports should match the current designated standard editions.
How Instacertify Helps
We confirm whether CE, UKCA or both apply, arrange testing in accredited labs, prepare the technical file and declaration and coordinate with approved bodies where needed. See our UKCA certification service and CE certification service.
Frequently asked questions
Is UKCA marking mandatory in 2026?
For most goods, no. Great Britain recognises the CE mark indefinitely for 21 product regulations, so you can use either CE or UKCA. Some sectors have their own rules, such as medical devices and construction products.
Can I use CE marking to sell in the UK?
Yes, for products under the 21 regulations covered by the indefinite recognition, including electrical equipment, machinery, toys, radio equipment and PPE. CE is also required for goods placed on the Northern Ireland market.
What does UKCA certification cost?
If self-declaration applies, the main cost is testing and preparing technical documentation. If a UK approved body must be involved, its assessment fee is added. Exact cost depends on the product, standards and number of models.
What is a UK declaration of conformity?
A document signed by the manufacturer or its authorised representative that lists the product, the UK regulations and designated standards applied, and the approved body if one was used. It must be kept with the technical file.
Can a UKCA mark be on a sticker or document?
Yes. UKCA marking can be placed on a label or an accompanying document instead of the product itself until 31 December 2027.
Does an Indian exporter need a UK representative?
For most goods it is optional, but the importer details must appear on the product or documents. Medical devices need a UK Responsible Person.
