Overview of EV Battery Testing (AIS-156 & AIS-038)
- Tested by
- CMVR testing agency
- Regulation
- AIS-156 & AIS-038 Rev 2
- Typical turnaround
- 4–8 weeks
- Sample needed
- Packs and cells per standard
Traction batteries for electric vehicles must meet AIS-156 (two- and three-wheelers, L category) or AIS-038 Rev 2 (cars, buses and trucks, M and N categories) as part of type approval under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules. After a series of electric scooter fires in 2022, the requirements were strengthened with tests on thermal propagation, cell-level safety and battery management functions.
The pack must survive vibration, thermal shock, mechanical shock and crush, fire resistance, external short circuit, overcharge, over-discharge and over-temperature, and meet ingress protection requirements. Cells are tested to their own standards. Pre-compliance testing helps battery and vehicle makers fix design weaknesses before booking scarce type-approval slots.
What we do for you
- Lab and parameter list chosen for your purpose: licence, export, buyer or internal QC
- Sampling guidance, and pickup or on-site sampling where needed
- One contact who follows up with the lab until the report is issued
- Report explained in plain language, with next steps if a result fails
