Overview of Cosmetic Stability & Preservative Efficacy Testing
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- ISO 11930 & ISO 17516
- Typical turnaround
- 4–12 weeks
- Sample needed
- 10–20 units in final pack
Stability testing stores the product in its final packaging at room temperature, high temperature, cold and freeze–thaw cycles, and checks appearance, odour, pH, viscosity and active content at intervals. It shows whether the formula separates, discolours or reacts with the pack, and supports the expiry date the Cosmetics Rules require on the label.
The preservative efficacy test (challenge test) under ISO 11930 deliberately adds bacteria, yeast and mould to the product and measures how quickly the preservative system kills them. It is essential for water-based products and for “preservative-free” or natural claims. Finished batches are tested for microbial limits under ISO 17516.
