Many kinds of footwear sold in India, from sandals and slippers to sports and safety shoes, are covered by Indian Standards brought under compulsory BIS certification, so manufacturers and importers need test reports for the ISI mark. The standards cover materials, construction and performance such as sole adhesion, flexing resistance, abrasion and slip resistance.
Leather is tested for tensile and tear strength, colour fastness, flexing and chromium VI, which can form in chrome-tanned leather and is restricted in export markets. Tanneries and footwear exporters also use tests to support environmental certifications and buyer audits.
