Get BIS Certification for India

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is the National Standards Body of India, established under the BIS Act, 2016. It operates under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and is responsible for the harmonious development of the activities of standardization, marking, and quality certification of goods.

BIS offers a comprehensive range of services aimed at quality assurance and standardization. These primarily include standards formulation for various sectors, product certification schemes (such as the ISI mark and Compulsory Registration Scheme), management systems certification, Hallmarking services, laboratory services, and foreign manufacturer certification.

There are several types of certification schemes under BIS. The most prominent is Scheme-I (ISI Mark), Scheme-II (Compulsory Registration Scheme / CRS), the Foreign Manufacturers Certification Scheme (FMCS), the Hallmarking Scheme for precious metals, and the Eco-Mark Scheme for environmentally friendly products.

The ISI Mark is a certification mark that certifies that a product conforms to an Indian Standard (IS) developed by the Bureau of Indian Standards. It is the most recognized sign of quality and safety in India for industrial and consumer goods. Obtaining this mark is mandatory for certain product categories such as cement, steel, household electrical appliances, and infant food.

BIS CRS stands for the Compulsory Registration Scheme, which operates under Scheme-II of the BIS conformity assessment regulations. Unlike the ISI mark which requires factory inspections, CRS is based on a self-declaration of conformity. This scheme is predominantly mandatory for electronics and IT goods such as laptops, mobile phones, power adapters, and LED lights.

BIS certification serves as a third-party guarantee of quality, safety, and reliability of products to the end consumer. For manufacturers, it is often a legal requirement to manufacture or sell specific goods in the Indian market. It enhances brand reputation, ensures compliance with public health and safety regulations, and facilitates smoother trade.

BIS certification is required by any manufacturer — whether located in India or abroad — who intends to sell products that fall under the mandatory certification list (Quality Control Orders) in the Indian market. This includes domestic manufacturers, foreign manufacturers, and sometimes importers.

The validity depends on the specific scheme. ISI Mark (Scheme-I) is initially granted for one to two years and can be renewed for up to five years. CRS registration is typically valid for two years and can be renewed every two to five years upon request and payment of necessary fees.
