India Temporarily Suspends BIS Quality Norms for Linear Alkyl Benzene Till July 2026

If you've been following the detergent or petrochemical industry, here's an important update straight from the Indian government. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has issued a fresh order that temporarily relaxes the mandatory quality compliance rules for Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) — a key ingredient used in making everyday cleaning products like detergents and dishwashing liquids.
What Exactly Happened?
Back in April 2022, the Indian government had put in place the Linear Alkyl Benzene (Quality Control) Order, 2022. This order made it mandatory for all LAB supplied in India to conform to Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) quality norms — essentially ensuring that every batch of LAB met a certain quality benchmark before it could be sold or used.
Now, on 30th March 2026, the government has officially amended that order through a Gazette Notification (S.O. 1655(E), announcing a temporary suspension of those mandatory quality standards.
Why Did the Government Do This?
The reason is simple — global supply chain disruptions.
The world is currently facing challenges in the supply of several petrochemicals, and LAB is one of them. To avoid a shortage of this critical raw material in India — which could directly impact the production of detergents and cleaning products — the government decided to ease the compliance requirements temporarily.
In plain terms: rather than risk a situation where manufacturers can't source enough LAB because of strict import/quality rules, the government is allowing some flexibility so that supply keeps flowing smoothly.
How Long Will This Relaxation Last?
The suspension is for a three-month window — from 1st April 2026 to 1st July 2026.
During this period, suppliers and manufacturers of LAB will not be required to strictly follow the BIS Indian Standard. After 1st July 2026, the original quality control rules are expected to kick back in.
What Does This Mean for the Industry?
- Importers and traders of LAB get temporary relief from BIS compliance requirements, making it easier to bring in material from global sources during this disrupted period.
- Detergent and surfactant manufacturers can continue their production without worrying about a supply crunch.
- Consumers are unlikely to feel any direct impact — this is largely a supply-chain and regulatory measure.
Bigger Picture
This move highlights just how interconnected India's chemical industry is with global supply chains. LAB is not just any chemical — it is the backbone of the surfactant industry, and a shortage could cascade into higher prices or unavailability of basic household cleaning products.
The government's proactive step to suspend the QCO temporarily, in consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards, shows a pragmatic approach — balancing quality enforcement with market realities.
