Pesticides are regulated under the Insecticides Act, 1968. Each product is registered with the Central Insecticides Board and Registration Committee (CIB&RC) for a specified active ingredient content and formulation type, and insecticide inspectors sample stock from manufacturers and dealers. A sample that fails can be declared misbranded, leading to stop-sale orders and prosecution.
Manufacturers, formulators and importers test each batch for active ingredient content and the physical properties that make the formulation work in the field: suspensibility, wettability, emulsion stability, pH and storage stability. Technical-grade material is checked for purity and impurities. Residues of pesticides in crops are a separate test; see pesticide residue testing.
