For new lubricants, blenders, distributors and large buyers check viscosity, viscosity index, flash point, pour point and base number against the product data sheet and the relevant BIS or API grade. Counterfeit and under-specification engine oils are common in the aftermarket, and testing settles quality complaints.
Used oil analysis is a low-cost form of condition monitoring for fleets, mining equipment, power plants and factories. Wear metals point to the component that is wearing, while water, fuel dilution, soot and a falling base number show whether the oil can stay in service. Re-refiners of used oil test it too, both on receipt and after re-refining.
