Petrol must meet IS 2796 and diesel IS 1460. Since BS-VI fuels were introduced across India in 2020, the sulphur limit for both is 10 mg/kg, and petrol is now blended with ethanol. Industrial fuels such as furnace oil, LDO and LSHS have their own standards for viscosity, sulphur and calorific value.
Fleet operators, transporters, DG set owners, boiler users and fuel traders test fuel to settle quality disputes, detect adulteration with kerosene or solvents, check water contamination in storage tanks, and confirm what they paid for. Engine and fuel-system makers also test fuel during warranty investigations.
