Toxicology data is needed to register agrochemicals with the Central Insecticides Board, to classify chemicals for safety data sheets and export registrations such as REACH, and to support the safety of new cosmetic ingredients. Studies are done to OECD test guidelines under Good Laboratory Practice, which India monitors through its national GLP compliance authority.
India has banned the testing of cosmetics on animals since 2014, and the import of cosmetics tested on animals. For cosmetics and many chemicals, validated in vitro methods now cover skin irritation, eye irritation, skin sensitisation and mutagenicity. Studies are chosen to match what each regulator accepts, so that one dataset serves as many markets as possible. For finished cosmetics, see fragrance allergen testing.
