The EU requires fragrance allergens to be named on the label of cosmetics when they exceed 0.001% in leave-on products and 0.01% in rinse-off products. Regulation (EU) 2023/1545 greatly extended the list of allergens that must be labelled, with transition periods for products already on the market. Detergents have similar labelling rules.
IFRA Standards, followed by fragrance houses worldwide, ban some materials and set maximum levels for others by product type. Indian perfume, attar, incense, cosmetic and detergent exporters use GC-MS allergen testing to build their labels and to check fragrance oils from suppliers.
