Overview of Asbestos Testing
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- Factories Act & export rules
- Typical turnaround
- 4–7 working days
- Sample needed
- 10–20 g bulk or air filters
Asbestos fibres cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, often decades after exposure. India no longer permits asbestos mining, but chrysotile asbestos is still used in some cement sheets and pipes, and older buildings, gaskets, brake linings and insulation may contain it. Work with asbestos is a hazardous process under the Factories Act, with limits on airborne fibres.
Several countries, including Australia, prohibit the import of goods containing asbestos and expect test evidence from exporters of building products, automotive parts and machinery. Bulk samples are identified by polarised light microscopy, and airborne fibres are counted on filters by phase contrast microscopy during demolition, removal or routine work.
