Indian factory law sets permissible exposure limits for chemical substances in the work environment, and requires factories carrying out hazardous processes to monitor them periodically. State factory rules add requirements for lighting, ventilation, temperature and noise. These sit under the Factories Act and the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code that consolidates it.
An industrial hygiene survey measures respirable dust and silica, metal fumes, solvent vapours and gases, noise exposure, illumination levels and heat stress (WBGT), both as area readings and with personal samplers worn by workers through the shift. Results feed into medical surveillance, the choice of PPE and engineering controls such as local exhaust ventilation. Factories also need a valid factory licence.
