Toilet soaps are graded under IS 2888 by their total fatty matter (TFM), the measure of how much soap a bar really contains. The grade is printed on the wrapper, and testing confirms it along with free alkali, moisture, unsaponified matter and lather. Soaps are cosmetics in India, so the manufacturer also needs a cosmetic manufacturing licence.
Laundry powders, liquids, bars and dishwashing products are tested for active matter, pH, alkalinity, phosphates and insoluble matter against their BIS standards, and for cleaning performance against a reference detergent. Private-label buyers and e-commerce platforms often ask for these reports before listing.
