Efficacy claims are tested with European standard methods. EN 1276 (bactericidal) and EN 1650 (fungicidal) are suspension tests, EN 13697 tests disinfectants on surfaces, EN 1500 tests hygienic hand rubs on volunteers’ hands, and EN 14476 tests virucidal activity. Each specifies the contact time, the soiling conditions and the log reduction a product must achieve.
Hand sanitisers are regulated as drugs in India and need a manufacturing licence, while hospital disinfectants must meet the efficacy hospitals specify in tenders. Testing also confirms the alcohol or active content, and checks for methanol, a dangerous substitute for ethanol and isopropanol.
