Overview of IK Impact Rating Testing (IEC 62262)
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- IEC 62262 & IEC 60068-2-75
- Typical turnaround
- 3–5 working days
- Sample needed
- 2–3 enclosures
The IK code under IEC 62262 rates how much mechanical impact an enclosure withstands, from IK00 (no protection) to IK10, which means withstanding a 20-joule impact. Impacts are applied with a defined hammer at the weakest points of the enclosure, following IEC 60068-2-75, and the product must remain safe and, where specified, keep working.
Outdoor luminaires, CCTV housings, EV chargers, ticketing kiosks, smart meters and railway equipment are commonly specified by IK rating in tenders. IK tests are usually done together with IP (ingress) testing, because an impact can break seals and let in water and dust.
