Overview of Radioactivity Testing
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- Importing-country norms
- Typical turnaround
- 5–7 working days
- Sample needed
- 1 kg or 1 litre
Several importing countries and buyers ask for proof that food and ingredients are free from radioactive contamination, a requirement that became common after the Chernobyl and Fukushima accidents. The test measures caesium-134, caesium-137 and iodine-131, the isotopes released in those events, by gamma spectrometry.
Spices, tea, rice, seafood and dairy ingredients are the products most often asked for. Drinking water can also be tested for gross alpha and beta activity under IS 10500.
