Overview of Drinking Water Testing (IS 10500)

Tested by
NABL-accredited partner lab
Regulation
IS 10500:2012
Typical turnaround
4–7 working days
Sample needed
2 litres + sterile bottle

IS 10500:2012 sets an acceptable limit and, where no alternative source exists, a higher permissible limit for each parameter in drinking water. It covers physical properties, general chemicals, toxic substances such as arsenic, lead and mercury, pesticides, radioactivity and bacteria. E. coli and total coliforms must not be detectable in any 100 ml sample.

Groundwater across India carries regional risks: fluoride in Rajasthan, Telangana and parts of the south, arsenic in the Ganga–Brahmaputra plains, nitrate near farmland and iron in the north-east. Food businesses, hotels, hospitals, housing societies and factories test their water for FSSAI, fire and health audits, and to check that treatment plants are working.

Frequently asked questions

Is a full IS 10500 test always needed?

Not always. A full test is useful for a new source or an audit; routine checks often cover physical, chemical and bacteriological basics plus the parameters known to be a risk in your area. We suggest the right scope.

How should the sample be collected?

Chemical tests need about two litres in a clean bottle, and bacteriological tests a sterile bottle from the lab, filled after running the tap and kept cool. Samples should reach the lab within 24 hours; we can arrange collection.

Will the Pollution Control Board accept the report?

Monitoring is done by labs accredited by NABL and recognised under the Environment (Protection) Act, which State Pollution Control Boards accept for consent compliance and returns. Some boards keep their own list of approved labs; we check yours before booking.

Who carries out the testing?

Instacertify’s partner laboratories, accredited by NABL to ISO/IEC 17025 for the parameters on your report. We choose the lab, arrange the sample, follow up until the report is issued and explain the results to you.
