Sulphur and nitrogen gases from traffic, industry and diesel generators, common around Indian cities and industrial zones, react with copper and silver on circuit boards. The result is creep corrosion and silver sulphide growth that cause intermittent faults and early hardware failure, and some manufacturers make warranty claims conditional on a clean environment.
ISA-71.04 classifies environments from G1 (mild) to GX (severe) by how fast corrosion films grow on copper and silver reactivity coupons exposed for about 30 days. ASHRAE’s data centre guidance asks for G1 conditions. The results show whether gas-phase filtration or better pressurisation is needed.
