The National Ambient Air Quality Standards, 2009 set limits for 12 pollutants: PM10, PM2.5, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, ozone, ammonia, lead, benzene, benzo(a)pyrene, arsenic and nickel. Separate limits apply to industrial, residential and rural areas and to ecologically sensitive areas.
Ambient monitoring is a routine condition of SPCB consents, a core part of environmental impact assessment baseline studies and environmental clearance compliance reports, and increasingly part of ESG reporting. Monitoring stations are set up at the boundary and at nearby receptors, usually running for 24 hours at a time.
