Overview of Packaging Barrier Testing (OTR & WVTR)
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- ASTM D3985 & ASTM F1249
- Typical turnaround
- 5–7 working days
- Sample needed
- 1 m² of film or 10 packs
Oxygen causes rancidity and colour loss, and moisture makes biscuits soft and powders cake. The oxygen transmission rate (OTR), measured under ASTM D3985, and the water vapour transmission rate (WVTR), measured under ASTM F1249, show how well a packaging material keeps them out.
Converters use barrier data to design laminates and to qualify new materials, such as recyclable mono-material structures replacing multilayer laminates under plastic EPR rules. Food, pharma and FMCG brands use it to match packaging to shelf life. Seal strength, tensile strength, thickness and leak tests complete the qualification.
