Corrugated boxes are bought on specification: number of plies, paper grammage (GSM), bursting strength and box compression strength. IS 2771 covers corrugated fibreboard boxes, and buyers usually add their own requirements. Because box makers can substitute lower-grade or recycled kraft, regular testing protects buyers from paying for strength they do not get.
Edge crush (ECT) and box compression (BCT) predict how high boxes can be stacked, while the Cobb test measures water absorption, which matters in India’s monsoon when humidity can cut box strength sharply. Testing of the packed product as a whole is done through ISTA transit testing.
