New pneumatic tyres sold in India are under compulsory BIS certification: IS 15633 for passenger car tyres, IS 15627 for two- and three-wheeler tyres and IS 15636 for truck and bus tyres, with inner tubes under IS 13098. The standards cover dimensions, breaking energy (plunger strength), bead unseating, endurance and high-speed performance.
Requirements for rolling resistance, wet grip and rolling sound were added to the tyre standards, bringing them closer to international practice and to tyre labelling. Tyre makers and importers test new sizes and designs, and fleet operators and retreaders use tests to settle performance claims. End-of-life tyres fall under EPR for tyre waste.
