Cotton is priced on its fibre properties. The High Volume Instrument (HVI) measures upper half mean length, length uniformity, bundle strength, micronaire, colour (Rd and +b) and trash on each sample in a few minutes. Spinners use the results to choose and blend bales, because fibre length and strength decide yarn count and yarn strength, and micronaire affects dyeing.
Ginners and traders test to grade lots and settle quality claims, exporters to meet contract specifications, and brands that use traceable Indian cotton to support their sourcing claims. Contamination such as polypropylene and jute fibres is checked separately, because it causes defects that only show up after dyeing.
