BIS Extends Implementation Date of IS 18112 for Digital Television Receivers to January 2027

New Delhi | August 2026 — The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced a further extension to the implementation date of IS 18112: Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission Specification. According to the latest BIS circular dated 31 July 2026, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has extended the implementation date of IS 18112 to 26 January 2027.
The latest extension provides additional time for manufacturers and other stakeholders involved with applicable television products to complete the required compliance and certification activities under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS).
What Is IS 18112?
IS 18112 specifies requirements for digital television receivers designed for satellite broadcast transmission. The standard was introduced as part of India's regulatory framework for digital television receivers and is implemented through the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021.
MeitY had originally notified the requirement for Digital Television Receivers for Satellite Broadcast Transmission conforming to IS 18112, with an initial implementation date of 26 April 2025. The implementation timeline was subsequently extended through various orders.
BIS has also issued implementation guidelines covering the application of IS 18112 together with the applicable television safety requirements under IS 616:2017 / IEC 60065:2014.

The most recent development is the further extension announced by MeitY.
As stated in the BIS circular Reg/IS 18112/Guidelines/06 dated 31 July 2026, the implementation date has now been extended to:
26 January 2027
BIS has clarified that the implementation guidelines issued through its circular dated 14 October 2025 will now be read with the revised implementation date of 26 January 2027. Importantly, the latest circular states that all other provisions of the earlier guidelines remain unchanged.
IS 18112 Timeline
- 26 April 2023: MeitY notified the requirement for digital television receivers conforming to IS 18112 under the CRS framework.
- 26 April 2025: Original implementation date.
- 26 October 2025: Earlier extended implementation date.
- 26 January 2026: Implementation date subsequently extended.
- 31 July 2026: BIS issued the latest circular confirming another extension.
- 26 January 2027: New implementation date.
IS 18112:2025 and the Revised Standard
IS 18112 has also undergone revision. The earlier IS 18112:2022 was revised and published as IS 18112:2025 — Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission Specification (First Revision).
BIS's earlier implementation guidelines provided transition provisions for the revised standard. The 2025 revision replaced the earlier version after the specified concurrent-running period, with the revised standard becoming the applicable version under the transition framework.
Therefore, manufacturers should not interpret the latest implementation extension as a cancellation of the IS 18112 requirement. Rather, the extension changes the implementation deadline, while the applicable technical and certification requirements continue to be governed by the relevant BIS guidelines.
What Does the Latest Extension Mean for Manufacturers?
The extension to 26 January 2027 gives manufacturers additional time to prepare their products and documentation for compliance.
Businesses manufacturing or dealing with applicable digital television receivers should use this additional period to:
- Review the applicability of IS 18112 to their television models.
- Evaluate products against the applicable requirements of the standard.
- Conduct required testing through appropriate laboratories.
- Review compliance with the applicable television safety requirements.
- Prepare technical documentation and test reports.
- Review existing BIS CRS registrations and determine whether model additions, modifications or other regulatory actions are required.
- Ensure that product marking and documentation requirements are correctly implemented.
- Complete the required BIS registration or compliance activities before the revised implementation deadline.

IS 18112 Compliance Along With Safety Requirements
The implementation of IS 18112 does not operate independently of the applicable television safety requirements. BIS's earlier implementation guidelines specified that television sets shall incorporate the requirements of Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission as per IS 18112, along with the safety requirements under IS 616:2017 / IEC 60065:2014.
Manufacturers should therefore evaluate both the satellite-reception requirements and applicable safety compliance when preparing their products for certification.
Why This Update Matters
The extension is particularly relevant for television manufacturers, importers and other businesses preparing products for the Indian market.
A regulatory implementation deadline can affect product testing schedules, certification planning, model registration, production planning and market launch timelines. The additional period until 26 January 2027 provides businesses with more time to address technical compliance requirements and complete their BIS-related activities.
However, companies should avoid waiting until the deadline approaches. Testing and certification can require coordination between manufacturers, laboratories and BIS processes. Early preparation can help identify technical gaps and reduce the risk of last-minute compliance delays.
What Should Businesses Do Now?
Manufacturers and importers of applicable digital television receivers should review their current compliance status against the latest BIS requirements.
Businesses with existing registrations should also evaluate whether their registered models are affected by the revised implementation requirements. Companies preparing to introduce new television models should consider IS 18112 compliance during the product development and testing stage rather than treating certification as a final-stage activity.
The latest BIS circular does not change the other provisions of the implementation guidelines; it only updates the implementation date to 26 January 2027.
Key Takeaway
The latest IS 18112 update of July 2026 provides manufacturers and stakeholders with additional time to comply with the Digital Television Receiver for Satellite Broadcast Transmission requirements.
The new implementation deadline is:
26 January 2027
All other provisions of the BIS implementation guidelines remain unchanged. Businesses dealing with applicable digital television receivers should use the extension period to complete testing, documentation and BIS CRS compliance activities well ahead of the new deadline.
