New Compliance Timeline BIS Extends IS 302 Part 1 Deadline To Feb 2027

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has officially announced a significant extension regarding the implementation of the revised safety standard for household electrical appliances.
For manufacturers and importers, this update provides a crucial window to align with the new safety protocols.
Official Notification
In a circular released on January 21, 2026, the BIS Registration Department confirmed the extension for the IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1:2020 standard.
This standard, which serves as the “General Requirements” for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances, was previously set for implementation by February 2026. However, acknowledging the industry’s need for transition time, the competent authority has decided to extend the deadline.
Key Dates to Remember
- Standard: IS 302 (Part 1): 2024 / IEC 60335-1:2020
- Previous Deadline: February 23, 2026
- New Implementation Deadline: February 23, 2027
All other terms and conditions from the original circular (dated November 27, 2024) remain unchanged.
What This Means for Manufacturers
This extension specifically references the guidelines for Adapters for Household and Similar Electrical Appliances, but the implications of IS 302 (Part 1) are broad.
The 2024 revision of IS 302 (Part 1) introduces critical updates over the 2008 version, including stricter requirements for:
- Battery-operated appliances (Li-ion safety).
- Smart appliances and cybersecurity.
- Software evaluation in electronic circuits.
While the extension grants an additional year, manufacturers are strongly advised not to delay. Transitioning to the 2024 standard early ensures your products remain compliant and competitive in the Indian market without last-minute disruptions.
