India is one of the world’s largest producers of dyes and pigments, and most of them are exported or used in products that are. Buyers check for banned aromatic amines from azo dyes, heavy metals such as lead, cadmium and hexavalent chromium, and other substances on brand restricted substances lists and the ZDHC MRSL.
Printing inks for food packaging are checked for heavy metals, mineral oil and residual solvents that can migrate into food, while inks for toys and children’s products must meet the toy safety limits for soluble metals. Performance tests such as colour strength, shade and fastness complete the picture.
