Overview of Aggregate Testing (Sand & Coarse Aggregate)
- Tested by
- NABL-accredited partner lab
- Regulation
- IS 383 & IS 2386
- Typical turnaround
- 5–7 working days
- Sample needed
- 25–50 kg per source
Aggregates make up most of the volume of concrete, so their quality decides its strength, workability and durability. IS 383 specifies aggregates for concrete, including manufactured sand, and the IS 2386 series sets the test methods: grading, particle shape, strength, specific gravity, water absorption, soundness and deleterious materials.
With river sand scarce in many states, manufactured sand (M-sand) from crushed stone is now widely used; its grading and fines content need checking because they affect water demand. Road and railway projects add tests such as Los Angeles abrasion and aggregate impact value. Quarry owners test to qualify their sources for government and infrastructure work.
