Cement sold in India has long been under compulsory BIS certification. Ordinary Portland cement is specified in IS 269, Portland pozzolana cement in IS 1489 and Portland slag cement in IS 455, with physical tests done to the IS 4031 series and chemical analysis to IS 4032. Manufacturers and grinding units test for their ISI licence and every dispatch, and importers need the same for their licence.
Construction projects test cement on receipt, because storage, mixing of grades and old stock affect strength. The key results are fineness, consistency, setting time, soundness and compressive strength at 3, 7 and 28 days. Cement results then feed into concrete testing and mix design.
