Typical turnaround

Sample needed
12–24 bottles per batch

Packaged drinking water must meet IS 14543 and natural mineral water IS 13428. BIS certification for both was mandatory until 17 October 2024; it is now voluntary, and plants need an FSSAI licence and must follow FSSAI’s Scheme of Testing from 1 January 2026. The standards are stricter than IS 10500, with tighter limits on pesticides, heavy metals and bromate (a by-product of ozone disinfection), and absence of pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Plants need periodic tests at an FSSAI-notified lab, routine tests on each batch in their in-house lab, and the full test if they hold or apply for a BIS licence. We also test raw water to size the treatment plant before a new unit is built.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need BIS or FSSAI for a packaged water plant?

FSSAI is required; BIS is now voluntary. Since 17 October 2024, an FSSAI licence and FSSAI’s Scheme of Testing are what the law requires. Many buyers and tenders still ask for the ISI mark, so some plants keep or apply for a BIS licence.

Will FSSAI and buyers accept the report?

Tests are done in labs accredited by NABL for the parameters reported, and for regulatory use in FSSAI-notified labs, which is what FSSAI, food safety officers and most buyers expect. For export, we match the lab to the importing country’s or buyer’s requirement.

Who carries out the testing?

Instacertify’s partner laboratories, accredited by NABL to ISO/IEC 17025 for the parameters on your report. We choose the lab, arrange the sample, follow up until the report is issued and explain the results to you.
