Overview of Wastewater & Effluent Testing

Tested by
NABL-accredited partner lab
Regulation
EP Rules 1986 & SPCB consent
Typical turnaround
5–7 working days
Sample needed
2–5 litres, chilled

The Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986 set general discharge standards for effluent going to inland surface water, public sewers, land or the sea, and industry-specific standards for sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, distilleries and tanneries. Your consent to operate from the State Pollution Control Board lists the limits that apply to you and how often you must monitor.

Testing the ETP or STP inlet and outlet shows both compliance and how well the plant is working. Reports from an EP Act-recognised lab are used for monthly and annual returns, the environmental statement, consent renewal and inspections.

What we do for you

  • Lab and parameter list chosen for your purpose: licence, export, buyer or internal QC
  • Sampling guidance, and pickup or on-site sampling where needed
  • One contact who follows up with the lab until the report is issued
  • Report explained in plain language, with next steps if a result fails

What to send

The lab confirms the exact quantity and packing for your product when we book the test.

Sample

  • Quantity: 2–5 litres, chilled
  • Sealed and labelled with the product name, batch number and date
  • Packed so that it cannot leak or be contaminated in transit

Details to share

  • Consent to operate or environmental clearance conditions, if you have them
  • A short description of the process and the sources to be checked
  • Purpose: SPCB return, consent renewal, audit, buyer or complaint
  • Previous test reports, if any

Frequently asked questions

How often should effluent be tested?

Your consent order sets the frequency, often monthly or quarterly for third-party tests. Large or highly polluting units may also need online monitoring connected to the CPCB and SPCB servers.

Will the Pollution Control Board accept the report?

Monitoring is done by labs accredited by NABL and recognised under the Environment (Protection) Act, which State Pollution Control Boards accept for consent compliance and returns. Some boards keep their own list of approved labs; we check yours before booking.

Who carries out the testing?

Instacertify’s partner laboratories, accredited by NABL to ISO/IEC 17025 for the parameters on your report. We choose the lab, arrange the sample, follow up until the report is issued and explain the results to you.
