Poor water chemistry is behind most boiler tube failures and cooling system breakdowns. IS 10392 sets the requirements for boiler feed water and boiler water by operating pressure, and boiler inspections under the Indian Boiler Regulations look at water treatment. Hardness, silica, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity and iron show whether the treatment programme is working.
Cooling towers concentrate minerals as water evaporates and can grow Legionella, the bacteria that cause Legionnaires’ disease when contaminated mist is inhaled. Testing combines chemistry, scaling and corrosion indices, total bacterial counts and Legionella culture to ISO 11731. RO and DM plants are checked for the quality of the water they produce. For water that people drink, see drinking water testing.
