The total protein figure on a label is usually calculated from nitrogen, which cheap amino acids such as glycine and taurine also contain. Adding them inflates the protein figure, a practice known as amino acid spiking. A full amino acid profile shows the actual composition and exposes spiking.
Brands of whey, plant and blended proteins use profiles to back BCAA, EAA and protein-quality claims, while feed and pet-food makers use them to balance rations. Essential amino acid data also feeds protein quality scores such as PDCAAS and DIAAS.
