Ayurvedic, Siddha and Unani (ASU) drugs are licensed under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Rules, and must meet the quality standards of the Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India and its sister pharmacopoeias where a monograph exists. Manufacturers test raw herbs, intermediates and finished products, and the rules require testing in an approved laboratory where the unit has no in-house facility.
Safety parameters matter most for export and for the reputation of the sector: heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium, mercury), aflatoxins, pesticide residues and microbial limits. Products made with metals or minerals by traditional processes, such as bhasmas, are tested against their own standards.
