Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin collected from rocks in the Himalayas and other mountain ranges. Raw shilajit must be purified (shodhana) before use, because it can carry heavy metals, soil and microbes. The Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia sets quality parameters for purified shilajit, and it is also sold as a food supplement under FSSAI.
Its popularity has brought adulteration with tar, bitumen and other resins, and inflated claims of fulvic acid content. Brands and exporters test for fulvic acid and other markers, heavy metals, which are the most common reason for rejection abroad, and microbial limits.
